Chairman’s Letter 2012

Dear Fellow Marian,

I would like to introduce myself as the new Chairman of the Queen Mary’s Club for 2012.

My appointment follows the second “instalment” from Peter Lawrenson. Peter is a huge part of the club and I take this opportunity to thank him publically for his continued efforts and support.

As previously reported, the Club has gone through a transformation. The School has now created a Development and Alumni Association which began in September 2011. Already we have seen how this can greatly assist in the running of our Club. Gill Columbine, the Alumni and Development Officer has been devoting her time and working incredibly hard to promote events, new and traditional, for the benefit of the Club and School.

Last year the Club embraced electronic communication and decided to distribute The Club’s Newsletters by email. This was warmly welcomed and proved to be very successful. Therefore, I would like to ask if anyone has QM friends who are not receiving information/newsletters from us, please ask them to email Gill Columbine on alumni@qmgs.walsall.sch.uk or contact me directly at david.barnes@bakerhughes.com and they will be added to the database.

Events taken place already this year include the unveiling of the Letters Patent (the original documents founding the School in 1554) on Thursday 23rd February. The evening was fantastic with Margaret Anderson (wife of the late John Anderson) delivering a wonderful speech. The Letters Patent are now displayed in a very impressive display box within the school. If anyone would like more information please contact Gill.

The Sports & Social club staged its first Beer Festival from 27th – 29th April. This new event was a huge success featuring several guest ales sponsored by local businesses. The weekend was well attended and proved so popular that we are looking to hold this again next year and hope to make it an annual event.

Forthcoming events include the annual Wreath Laying ceremony, the School’s Summer Festival, the Summer Ball and, as always, the QMC Annual Dinner during the last weekend in September.

Wreath Laying this year is on Friday 6th July. In addition to the normal agenda this year there will be a talk at 5pm and a Drinks Reception in London for Ex Pupils between 6pm and 8pm. So, all you QMGS Londoners come along and say hello! Full details are on the website, where you can also buy a ticket.

The Summer Festival, a significant fund-raiser, takes place in July at the School. At this point, two books of raffle tickets would normally accompany this letter with a request to buy them or sell them on. However as we cannot send these by e-mail if you would like to purchase the usual £5 worth of tickets, or just make a small donation to the Festival, please respond to this email accordingly and post a cheque for £5 (or more) payable to QMGS, to the School c/o Carol Hamilton in the Finance Office. We will be happy to forward tickets at your request.

The Summer “Jubilee” Ball is being organised by the QMA and takes place on Saturday 23rd June. For further information please visit the School website.

Plans for the Annual Dinner, which takes place on Saturday 29th September, are well advanced. The guest speaker will be Paul Walton. Paul is an Old Boy and the early adopter of The Value Engineers. Paul attended the school from 1967-1974. There is some more information available on the website. Also, at lunchtime on that day, all donors and campaigners will be invited to the Opening of the new Sixth Form Centre, so if you have not made your donation yet you will need to send it in quickly!

Last year’s dinner was well attended and it was great to see good numbers of Old Boys returning to share in this great occasion. May I please remind fellow Marians that this event is for ex-pupils of the School only, and all Old Boys are welcome. This year marks the 50th anniversary of school leavers from 1962. It would be fantastic to see a table of Old boys representing this year.

The club introduced on-line ticket purchase last year. Again another success and we will roll this out from now on. However, we recognise that not all prospective guests are able to access internet facilities so tickets will still be available to purchase in the traditional way. Ticket price is superb value at £25. Drinks are available at the bar and in the Pavilion afterwards.

I now plea for help!

The Sports and Social club opens the Pavilion Bar every Friday night throughout the year. The bar relies on volunteer staff and generates a significant amount of money for the school. We are in need of new volunteers to run the bar. This would equate to just one Friday evening every two months or every 3 months if we get more volunteers. If you would like participate in the bar rota please e-mail me directly on david.barnes@bakerhughes.com.

Last, but certainly not least, QMC is always looking for Old Boys to join the committee. We meet a handful of times a year so if you feel you would be willing to give up a little time to help us keep this great Club moving forward then please get in touch with either myself or Gill.
