George Albert Follows (QM 1929-35)

Died on 6th February 1958

Journalist George Follows (QM 1929-35) was killed along with eight Manchester United players and 14 others on 6th February 1958 as the team returned from a European Cup tie in Belgrade.

George Follows was a reporter on Manchester United for the Daily Herald and travelled to Belgrade for the match with a number of other sports journalists. He was 40 when he died. He had worked his way up from a number of Walsall newspapers to the lofty position of sports reporter for the prestigious Daily Herald, the old-fashioned, broadsheet newspaper that ultimately was transformed into the Sun. He had his own column “Follow George Follows” on the paper and was covering Manchester United’s first trip into Europe when the accident happened.
