Another week, another Old Boys game in the bag, this time facing familiar foes in the QMGS Staff. In a game that was washed out last year, glorious sunshine greeted both teams this time at the QM field. What followed was once again a night of the sublime, the ridiculous, and the even more ridiculous as you’ll see.
Losing the toss, the Old Boys were sent into bat by the staff in a challenge to put down a competitive score. As the openers Luke and Sanesh strode out to the middle, they were met by an opening bowling tandem well know to Old Boys in the form of Messrs Fadden and Langton. Not for the first time this summer, the QM pitch was unpredictable in nature. This combined with the tight early bowling meant scoring came at a premium. Martin’s persistent line and length especially was really causing problems. He struck not once but four times in the early overs, including one superbly caught at 1st slip. He finished with figures of 4/14 in one of the best spells the Old Boys are likely to face all season.
After 7 overs, the Old Boys were in a bit of a hole at 32/4. As with last week though in the face of a collapse, Glenn held firm at the other end. Together with the returning Roger, the pair put together a partnership to get the innings back on track. Glenn played some lovely shots all around the wicket (aided at times by some questionable fielding), scoring at above a run a ball. A boundary off his final delivery faced lead to him finishing on 28* off 21 balls, sealing the orange cap for top run scorer for another week. Roger (16) scored freely too and was unlucky to be dismissed following a brilliant piece of individual fielding from wicketkeeper Hawkins who ran him out with a direct hit.
The retirement of Glenn led to Andrew Payne coming to the crease. He noted just before he went out to bat that his highest score for the Old Boys was 16 runs. Knowingly or not, the team were put on notice that some magic was about to happen. Showing a newfound flair, the runs were flowing from Payney’s bat immediately. A mighty heave over the deep legside fielder and lovely guide to third man both lead to boundaries. Cheered on by teammates with his high score already passed; anticipation grew of batting retirement. Sadly, he fell just short after edging one behind to finish on 20 off 19 balls. The team showed plenty of appreciation though for a top knock that kept the momentum for the innings going.
Rob came in next however a hara-kiri style run out sent himself back to the sheds cheaply. This meant that Scoop Dogg himself, Stephen Dallaway, now had to come in for his annual foray at the batting crease. Mercifully for the staff team though, the patented scoop shot was kept in the closet for today. What we were treated to instead was some classical stroke play into the offside to keep the strike rotating. Together with Richard Wright who kept the total ticking along with a composed, better than a run a ball 11*, the pair closed out the innings nicely to see the Old Boys to a total of 136/8 off 20 overs. Given where the team were earlier in the innings, it was a terrific fight back to post a solid score.
In response the staff team were on the back foot immediately. Satpal got the Old Boys defence off to the perfect start in the 2nd over as the first ball of his spell was a spot on yorker that crashed into the stumps. His bowling along with Roger’s at the other end gave very little for the batsmen to get away. Satpal struck two further times in his spell, drawing false shots that were both caught by his opening bowling partner. The second catch taken was a testing one following a ball skied in the air that hung up there for an eternity. Most would’ve struggled under the high ball; the safe hands of Roger secured it nonchalantly. Satpal finishing with outstanding figures of 3/10 from his 3 overs.
The mystery spin of Rob then came into the attack. The mystery being whether the ball was going to be a full toss or a dirty half tracker. Despite the filth coming down, chances were somehow created. The first one a one handed caught and bowled opportunity that Rob couldn’t hang on to. Two balls later another full toss from the captain was heaved to long on. Waiting there, the reliable hands of Satpal, donning the yellow cap of the leading fielder for the season. Running in, the ball crashed into his hands and then out again for another spurned opportunity.
Despite the drops, at the 10 over mark the Old Boys kept the Staff in check at 46/3. The change of ends saw the spinning duo of Stephen Dallaway and Richard Wright come into the attack. Stephen’s signature loop soon forced an aggressive shot to the legside. The ball not hit cleanly was caught in spectacular style by Roger once again. This time running in from the boundaries edge, diving low to snaffle the ball before it hit the ground. As others fumbled around him, Roger was having his own catch of the season competition.
At the other end, Richard’s off spin was ripping sharply, causing all sorts of trouble. A top edge from the batsman was found and looped to short fine leg only for it to be dropped again. Umong the guilty party this time. The challenging bowling was met by the younger Langton who batted skilfully well above his years, punishing a rare loose ball to the fine leg boundary. Further chances were still created with Satpal putting one down again at mid-off. In spite of wickets not being taken, the bowling was miserly putting the Old Boys well on top.
Umong and Andy then came on to wrap up the innings. Umong was right into his stride hitting the sticks in his first over for another wicket. Payney though was the latest bowler to suffer at the hands of his teammates. Not one, but two drops from his solitary over. Glenn shelling one at mid-on and then Satpal for the third time that evening at mid-off again. As each chance went down the laughter in the field intensified in what was a shambolic display of catching (Roger aside) that would rival the most incompetent of village teams. I believe the final tally was 8 dropped. One may have thought a Hansie Cronje like match fixing operation was in place.
Despite the slippery fingers, the all-round solid bowling display restricted the Staff to 96/5 off 20 overs, giving the Old Boys the victory by 40 runs. For his fine batting exploits, Andy was voted an almost unanimous man of the match. The voting tally forever immortalized in the team trophy cabinet for future generations to gaze upon. Looking on to next week, the Old Boys will be back in action again and getting their safari hats out as some elephants will be coming to town.

On a scorching June evening lead this week by captain Humphries, the Old Boys were back facing the newly rebranded team of Walsall Unity. The opposition turning up in their yellow pyjamas, one would have thought a white ball match was due to take place.
In what was probably a first for the Old Boys, the full game was being recorded from the boundary by the opposition. For what audience I’m still unsure. We await to see if the footage makes its way online or if it has been sent directly to You’ve Been Framed.
Winning the toss, Glenn elected to bat on what appeared to be ideal conditions to post an imposing total. The openers Luke and Satpal strode to the wicket with purpose to make their mark. It soon became apparent though this was no ordinary wicket. The first ball of the innings shot along the ground, a few balls later one exploded upwards off a good length. This pitch was harder to read than Prince Harry’s book. These were hazardous conditions that would make even the best of batsmen have to work for their runs.
With the playing surface against them, both Luke and Satpal adapted well and took to their task. Both batsmen stood firm against the spitting ball and put on an excellent opening partnership. Taking the runs on offer and putting the bad balls to the boundary, they each made excellent run a ball 25s to put down a perfect platform for the innings.
Despite the two openers retiring, scoring remained tough and the bowling from the opposition was steady and persistent. Following the wicket of Phil falling, the batting partnership of Sanesh and Richard Wright kept the Old Boys on track on the tough surface. There were some lovely strokes played, with Sanesh advancing down the wicket with some whippage through midwicket and Richard dissecting the fielders with a sublime cover drive boundary, my personal shot of the day. Both batsmen succumb though to the wily spinning duo operating from the Birmingham Road end. Knowingly or not, the bowlers emulated the flight and guile of the absent Stephen Dallaway to have both men stumped. The original Bazball Alex came in next but also fell victim to the surface gremlins. A slow spinning ball bouncing unbelievably to shoulder height was driven high in the air to be taken by the fielder at cover. It was a shot Glenn Maxwell would be proud of.
A couple of other cheap wickets fell soon afterwards leaving the Old Boys in the precarious position of 100/6 with 3 overs left. The partnership of Navjot and Rich Langton consolidated though in the final few overs to end the innings positively. Navjot smashed his first two balls faced for sixes with a mighty crack coming from the bat, a sound not heard at the school since caning was abolished. Some clever and hard running by Rich, who came under fire both from the unpredictable pitch and the fielder throwing one at his head managed to help steer the Old Boys to 128/6 off 20 overs. A total probably lower than hoped for but given the nature of the surface one that could possibly be defended.
For the run chase the Old Boys strode onto the field to defend their total and were left waiting for an age for the openers to come on. Sporting tactics or just a team more disorganised than ourselves? who knows. In possibly a premonition of what was to come, Rich Langton put the first ball of the innings on a tidy line and length, only for it to be dispatched by the burly opener over long on for 6. A few more lustful blows had the Old Boys on the back foot from the off. The team fought back though, capitalising on some confusion to force a run out and Rich Langton on a shortened run up was rewarded for some probing bowling forcing a thick edge to the waiting Glenn at gully.
Further chances came the Old Boys way however were spurned. Rich Langton again forced another false stroke that led to a tough low caught and bowled chance that was unable to be taken. Just a half opportunity one would have thought, “that’s a drop” came the call from Payney in the field. Shortly afterwards another chance came Rich’s way. Another false stroke from the batsman saw the ball travelling in the air to mid-off. Keen to show Payney and the world his fielding prowess, Rich strode in eagerly to snaffle the opportunity. The ball however had other ideas. No sooner had Rich taken a few steps forward, he was soon backtracking as the ball sailed over his head, landing safely, and making its way to the boundary. This time, not a word said from the field. Rich could already feel Payney’s dagger like judgement coming his way, searing into him as he went to fetch the ball. “I know, I know, you don’t have to say it” he said, turning to Payney to admit his misjudgement. Laughter was heard around the field; no error can escape ridicule on this team.
Following their let offs, Walsall Unity kept amassing runs at a decent rate. Captain Glenn turned to a change of pace with the spin of Andy and Sanesh coming on. The batsmen were still aggressive though and scoring quickly. The moon ball flight tactic from Andy paid dividends in the end, forcing the batsmen to hit one in the air to the covers in reach of Sanesh who took an excellent catch. Sanesh was rewarded himself too for some persistent bowling, cleaning up the pegs of a Unity batsman attempting a ridiculous reverse sweep. At the 10 over mark the score was 83/4. The Old Boys were up against it, but the wickets taken meant there was still a chance.
Glenn decided then to bring himself on to bowl to try and derail the opposition’s momentum. A slip on the crease on his first ball though nearly derailed himself. Seeing the off spin come down, the batsman decided it was time swing his arms through one. The shot wasn’t timed though and presented a chance to Satpal fielding at long on. With his eyes on the ball, running in with his hands forward together like Oliver Twist asking for more, Satpal managed to get there and took a terrific catch on the run to reduce Unity to 5 down.
Despite taking wickets, Walsall Unity kept on coming. The flow of runs could not be stemmed as they still scored freely. As the chances of victory waned, there was still humour to be had in the field though. This time it was Richard Wright’s turn for the misjudgement as the spin on the ball coming towards him from a cut shot was not noticed. Richard went one way, the ball went another - it was just one of those nights for the Old Boys. In the end, Walsall Unity chased down the total in 16 overs to win it by 5 wickets. Jokes aside, I would like to give a special mention to Luke who I thought kept brilliantly all night in the face of the outrageous bounce coming from the wicket.
Despite the result not going the team’s way it was still a fun night in the glorious summer weather, with a well-earned tea had by all afterwards. Next week is the big one for the Old Boys, the match against the QMGS Senior XI. Bragging rights are to be had in a game that over the years tends to end up coming down to the wire.

After the toss of a coin that I wasn't present for QMOB headed out into the uncut field to be greeted by a questionable deck and a familiar face with Satpal opening the YPF batting. Local rules also dictated that there were to be 4 fielders inside (the non-existent) 30-yard circle and batters to retire at 50.
QM opening duo Alex (2-13) and Steve Dallaway (0-25) set about their business with Alex making an early breakthrough. Alex also disagreed with the retire at 50 rule and proceeded to deliver an accurate yorker to Satpal’s ankle which effectively ended his evening early.
Agha (43) was the only YPF batter to find any real rhythm as Martin (2-11), Payne (0-18) and Umong (0-24) send down the middle overs. It was left to Langd/ton (0-16) and Sanesh (2-5) to finish the innings, with Sanesh unlucky not to have a third wicket, with Luke deciding he prefers run outs to stumpings.
That left a fraction over a run a ball for QMOB to chase on a difficult surface. Phil fell early, but Roger (25*) and Luke (25*) steadied the ship and retired on the correct amount of runs.
Despite a middle order wobble which saw the head dismissed by a current pupil and a couple of other fall, Umong, Sanesh and Alex (6* off 1 ball) scored the remaining runs with a couple of overs to spare.
A strong performance from all involved!

QMOB win by 10 wickets
After an early finish and a sociable beer Alex decided to start distributing jobs. Unfortunately I couldn't sink my Peroni (£2.50 btw, no such thing as inflation in the clubhouse!) fast enough and I was issued the role of being the match report writer. Here goes (without access to the scorecard!).
QMOB gracefully forfeited the toss as Phoenix we're awaiting more of their team to turn up, and we trudged out with some light drizzle in the air. We set about our task but Phoenix got off to a flier and were on 30 after 4 overs. The tide turned with the introduction of debutant Martin Fadden and Rich Langd/ton (one for Quiggers there) who bowled with control and skill to restrict Phoenix in the remaining overs from the Steve Watkins end.
The mid point of the innings saw the introduction of Steve Dallaway who bowled with accuracy, and the Phoenix batsmen couldn't generate the necessary bat speed to get him away. Steve ended the innings with 4 well earned wickets.
It was the last over of the innings which saw the game's memorable moment. Glenn Humphries bowled his first 3 down the leg side and after a sarcastic shout or two from his teammates he managed to get one outside off. The Phoenix batsman walloped an aerial drive to shortish extra cover where it met the immovable object that was Sanesh's chest. It's safe to say that there's not a lot of flesh on the young man to keep ball from bone and the thud was audible from all corners of the playing field. Remarkably the catch was held and the innings closed with Phoenix 79 all out.
The QMOB innings was short and sweet. Alex and Luke strode out and each collected their 25 runs required to retire and build their average for the year. The remaining runs were knocked off by Sanesh and Glenn inside 10 overs to complete one of the more comprehensive victories and complete QMOB performances of recent times.
Martin picked up the M.O.M. award for some wonderfully effective bowling. It was a pleasure as always and I look forward to seeing you all at Y.P.F. next week!

Unfortunately, due to issues with the opposition being able to get out a full team, the match scheduled for tomorrow evening has had to be cancelled. Pretty gutted about this as the weather looks likely to be excellent as well.
There is hope though that the game can be rearranged for one of the following couple of weeks though. In order to gauge availability for the next few weeks I've created a doodle poll which is below. Thanks to those that came out last night, a really fun game which saw the Old Boys defend a total of 95 for a thrilling 1 run victory over the 1st/2nd XI. Once again, a big thank you to Alex Dallaway who has written up another top draw match report of the game which I have attached. This week's report is entitled "A royal visit, balls of steel and some cricket in the middle" and is definitely a must read and can be found on the news page.
Unfortunately, I won't be able to get the updated team stats to you at the moment however I'm hoping I'll can get them done and sent out sometime next week.

Another good match and performance last night, nice to get a win under our belts too. A big thanks to Alex Dallaway who has written up the match report of last night's game which is entitled "The Ugly Duckling, The Marathon Man and Like a Bolt out the Blue". Make sure you have a read as it's a terrific summary of all that went on (this can be found on the news page).
I'm also planning on updating and sending out the player stats for the season over the weekend too so be on the lookout for that.

Under current covid guidelines we are going to have to adhere to adaptive gameplay as well as maintaining social distancing both on and off the field. The bullet points below are the advice from the ECB with regards to match-play to familiarise yourself with.
•Fielders to maintain social distancing (no fielders allowed within 1m of the batter or other fielders).
•The non-striking batter should remain socially distanced from the umpire and should run on the opposite side of the pitch to the batter on strike.
•No sweat or saliva to be applied to the ball at any time.
•A ‘hygiene break’ should take place every six overs or every 20 minutes, whichever is sooner, in which the ball is cleaned with a suitable disinfectant wipe and all participants’ hands are cleaned using a suitable sanitiser. This routine should also be followed at the start of any drinks break or the close of an innings. The responsibility for sanitising the ball during the match will lie with the fielding captain, not the umpire.
•Bowlers will not be able to hand their cap or hat, jumper or glasses to the umpire. They will need to place these themselves at the boundary.
•Communal scorebooks passed from one player to another should be avoided.
•Social distancing must always be maintained including during post-wicket celebrations, drinks breaks and tactical discussions.
•There should be no handshakes, shouting or spitting.
•Minimise sharing of ball in match by limiting contact as the ball makes its way back to the bowler e.g. ball goes straight from wicketkeeper to bowler instead of around surrounding fielders.
•Those not on the field of play should refrain from all contact with the ball e.g. returning it to the field of play.
•Umpires should refrain from any contact with the ball, it can be returned to the base of the stumps at breaks and wickets.
•Umpires should be responsible for the stumps closest to them and should be the only person replacing the bails if dislodged.

Just a reminder for those coming to the nets this evening to come down ready in your gear as the changing rooms and pavilion will both be closed.
You will also need to make sure that you don't wear spikes as they aren't permitted in the nets.

With the wet and windy weather that is due throughout the afternoon and into the evening, tonight's net session will have to be called off.
It's very frustrating after the year away that we are once again delayed but I don't think practicing in these conditions would be much fun.

News from Rob Hall dated 06/05/2021
So long as the planned covid restriction easing which would allow groups of up to 30 to meet outside goes ahead on May 17th, we will be able to start Old Boys Cricket activities for this year (if there are any changes made to the planned restriction easing that mean we have to alter plans).
To start the season there will be couple of sessions for the team to use the new outdoor net facilities at the school. These sessions will be on Thursday 20th May and Thursday 27th May between 18:00 - 20:00. The nets are located on the main field on the side towards the Birmingham Road, if you head down to the pavilion you'll see them.
The fee for each session is £3. At the moment we won't be collecting cash subs so after attending you'll need to transfer the fee into the team account. I will confirm the account details to those who attend in due course.
The pavilion and all changing rooms will be closed so you'll need to come down ready in your gear. You will also need to bring your own hand sanitizer and drinks. Please also bring your own equipment to use as we need to avoid any sharing. If you think you'll need use of anything from the team kitbag in these sessions, please do let me know beforehand. The plan is also to allocate set balls for each individual to use for the entirety of the session.

The team is very active and has players ranging from 18 to 69 years. There is a very strong link with Dolgellau CC and once a year there is a tour match around the May bank holiday, whilst stopping over at Farchynys in the build-up to the match. There are usually a couple of net sessions before the season starts and typically there are T20 matches on a Thursday evening, followed by a hot meal and drinks in the pavilion afterward.
All are welcome to pop down and support, umpire, score or put your whites on. There is a regular uptake from around twenty players with a similar number dipping in and out when other commitments allow. All help is appreciated with this thriving alumni community.
